Where to Stay in Puno
The centre near the Plaza de Armas for the tours and restaurants, the lake shore for the view, or a night on the islands. Which base suits which trip, with a hotel map.
Stay in the centre of Puno, within a few blocks of the Plaza de Armas: every island tour and the Sillustani trips pick up there, the restaurants are on the pedestrian Jirón Lima, and you can walk everywhere at an altitude where walking is work. Choose a lakeside hotel instead if the view of the water matters more to you than walking to dinner, and spend a night on Amantani if you want to sleep on the lake itself.

The bases compared
| Base | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Centre (Plaza de Armas, Jirón Lima) | Tour pick-ups, restaurants, walking everywhere | Street noise; rooms vary a lot, check the heating |
| Lake shore | Water views, larger hotels, quiet | Taxis into town for dinner; check the tour pick-up covers it |
| Amantani or the Uros | A night on the lake with a family or in a reed lodge | Basic rooms, cold nights; booked as a tour |
| Juliaca | An early flight from the airport | Inland, no lake; most people transfer to Puno |
The centre
The streets around the Plaza de Armas and the cathedral, and the pedestrian Jirón Lima that runs from it, are where most visitors stay. Tours pick up at hotels in the centre or at the cathedral, so you will not need a taxi at 7:30 in the morning. The port is a walk downhill, and back uphill in the evening, which you will feel at 3,827 m.

Heating matters. Nights in Puno are cold all year and close to freezing in June and July, and not every hotel heats its rooms. Look for heating, or at least an electric heater, in the room description, and extra blankets.
The lake shore
A handful of larger hotels sit on the shore of the bay outside the centre, several on Avenida Sesquicentenario south of the port, where the Yavari steamship is moored as a museum. They are quieter and have the view; you trade that for a taxi into town for dinner. Ask whether your tour picks up there: most pick-ups cover central Puno only, and one listing names hotels outside the centre as not included.
A night on the islands
To sleep on the lake itself, take the two-day tour that stays with a host family on Amantani: the room, three meals and the boat are arranged for you, and you see Taquile the next morning. A few Uros families also run small lodges on their reed islands. Both are simple and cold; leave big luggage at your Puno hotel. The Amantani homestay page explains the night.
Juliaca, for the airport
The airport for Puno is at Juliaca, 44 km north of Puno, about 45 minutes by road according to the Peruvian Congress’s profile of the Puno region. Juliaca is an inland commercial city with no lake; stay there only for a very early flight.
How many nights?
Two nights in Puno suit most people: one day on the lake and a half day for Sillustani, or for arriving from Cusco. Add a night for the Amantani homestay. The Puno page has the plan day by day.
