How a Taquile Island Tour Works

Pick-up in Puno, the Uros, a long crossing, three hours on Taquile, and the boat home.

  1. Pick-up and the Uros

The van takes you to the port in about 15 minutes and the speedboat reaches the Uros in about 30. About two hours there, with an optional reed-boat ride paid on the spot.

  2. Across to Taquile

About 75 minutes by speedboat across open water to Taquile, 35 km east of Puno. On the old slow boats this crossing took about three hours.

  3. The Village and Lunch

A walk up from the jetty to the village square, between about 3,810 m and 3,950 m, the weavers' work, and lunch at an island restaurant.

  4. Back to Puno

About an hour and a half back across the lake, into Puno in the late afternoon.

The Guide

Taquile: The Walk, the Weaving and the Day

A natural island of about 6 km² where the textile art is part of daily life, a long boat ride from Puno.

Taquile is the natural island at the far end of the classic Lake Titicaca day: about 35 km east of Puno, a ridge of terraced fields and stone paths with no cars, where people wear and make the textiles that UNESCO lists as intangible heritage. Every full-day tour from Puno pairs it with the Uros. The tour at the top of this page spends about two hours on the Uros and three on Taquile with lunch, from $26 in current promotion (usually $30), rated 4.8 from 620 reviews (checked October 2026), with both landing fees included.

The island

Taquile covers about 6 km². The jetty sits near the lake at about 3,810 m and the village a little under 150 m higher, at about 3,950 m, according to the Peruvian Congress’s profile of the Puno region, so the first thing you do is climb: a steady walk up stone steps and paths between terraced fields, with stone arches over the path and the lake opening up below. At this height, walk slowly and stop often. The island has pre-Inca remains on its highest points, and since 1970 it has belonged to the people of Taquile.

The village square is the heart of the visit: the church, the community’s shop for textiles and the views east across the water. Most tours then walk on to a family restaurant for lunch before walking down to the boat.

The textiles

UNESCO inscribed Taquile and its textile art on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008, after a first proclamation in 2005. Its description says the textiles are made every day by both men and women, of all ages, knitted or woven on ground looms with four stakes, as the islanders’ ancestors did. Two pieces to look for: the chullo, a knitted hat with earflaps, and the calendar waistband, a wide woven belt that shows the year’s ritual and farming cycles.

What people wear on Taquile says something about them, and your guide will explain the details on the walk. The textiles are on sale in the square.

Which Taquile day?

For most people the answer is a speedboat day with lunch included: it gives you about three hours on Taquile and back in Puno before dark. The day at the top of this page and the homepage day are close in price and itinerary; pick by date, by group size and by which one has seats.

A night on Taquile?

Families on Taquile also host visitors overnight, and “Taquile island homestay” is searched for that reason. The organised two-day trips almost all sleep on Amantani instead and visit Taquile the next day, so if you want a night on the lake with transport arranged, the Amantani page is the one to read.

What to bring

  • Soles in cash: for the reed boat at the Uros, drinks, and textiles in the square.
  • Water, a hat and sunscreen: the climb from the jetty is in full sun at about 3,900 m.
  • Good shoes: the paths are stone steps, uneven in places.
  • A warm layer for the boat: the wind on the open lake is cold even on a sunny day.

How these facts were checked

Taquile’s area, altitudes, distance from Puno and the 1970 change of ownership are from the Peruvian Congress’s profile of the Puno region (congreso.gob.pe). The inscription and the description of the textiles are from UNESCO’s page for “Taquile and its textile art” (ich.unesco.org), read 27 October 2026. Tour prices, ratings, times and inclusions are from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026.
