Is Lake Titicaca Worth It?
Yes, for most people on a Cusco trip with two days to spare: reed islands, a stone island of weavers and a night with a family. Who will love it, who will not, and the trip that suits each.
Yes, Lake Titicaca is worth it for most people travelling around Cusco, if they can give it two nights: no other trip in Peru puts you on a village of floating reed islands in the morning and on a stone island of weavers by lunch, at 3,810 m on the highest navigable lake in the world. It is not worth it if you have only a day to spare from Cusco, which is 387 km away by road, or if the altitude is already giving you trouble.

Who will love it
- Anyone curious about how people live: the Uros build their islands, houses and boats from totora reed; on Taquile, men and women of all ages knit and weave the textiles UNESCO lists as intangible heritage; on Amantani you stay with a farming family.
- Travellers on the Cusco to La Paz route: the lake is on your way, by road, train or across the border at Kasani.
- Anyone with two days: one for the islands, one for Sillustani or a night on Amantani.
Who might skip it
- One free day from Cusco: the journey alone is a full day each way; an overnight coach trip saves time but costs you two short nights.
- Trouble with altitude: Puno sits at 3,827 m, above Cusco. If Cusco was hard, think twice, and see the altitude guide.
- Hoping for untouched village life on the Uros: the Uros visit is organised for visitors, with crafts for sale. Go knowing that, or spend more of the day on Taquile and the night on Amantani.
Is it worth going to Puno?
As a base, yes: it is the only port for the Peruvian islands, and it is where the road and the train from Cusco arrive. As a town, it is a working city rather than a beauty, but it has the Plaza de Armas and cathedral, good food on Jirón Lima, the Yavari steamship and, in February, the Candelaria festival. Two nights is the right length for most people; the Puno page has the plan.
Is Taquile worth it?
Yes, for most people: it is the calmer, natural half of the classic day, with a walk up stone paths to the village, views across to the snow peaks and lunch on the island. It means a climb of about 140 m at nearly 4,000 m, so take it slowly. If walking at altitude is hard for you, the three-hour Uros trip has no climb at all.

How these facts were checked
The lake’s altitude and its description as the highest navigable lake are from SERNANP (visitaareasnaturales.sernanp.gob.pe); Puno’s altitude from the Municipalidad Provincial de Puno; Taquile’s textiles from UNESCO (ich.unesco.org); the road distance was measured along the road.
