The Guide
Lake Titicaca from Puno: What You See, What It Costs, Which Tour
A reed island built by hand, a stone island of weavers, and a night with a family if you have one to spare, all from the port of Puno at 3,827 m.
A Lake Titicaca tour starts in Puno, the Peruvian town on the lake’s western shore, and nearly every one of them visits the same two islands. The classic day takes a speedboat across Puno bay to the Uros, the floating islands the Uros people build from totora reed, and then out across open water to Taquile, a hilly island of stone paths and weavers, with lunch there and back in Puno by mid-afternoon. The tours differ in group size and boat, and in one choice that changes the trip: whether you come back that afternoon or spend the night with a family on Amantani.
The day at the top of this page is the one we would book first. Titicaca Travel Peru’s speedboat tour picks you up in central Puno at about 7:30, visits the Uros and gives you about three hours on Taquile with lunch, from $27 in current promotion (usually $34) per person, rated 4.7 from 1,442 reviews (checked October 2026). The landing fees for both islands are in the price.

What the day looks like
The van collects you from your hotel and drives the few minutes to the port. The first stop is the Uros, about 5 km across the water from the port, inside the reed beds of the bay. The islands are platforms of cut totora reed laid in layers over floating blocks of reed roots, and the families who live on them have to add fresh reed as the bottom layers rot. Peru’s protected-area service, SERNANP, which manages the Titicaca National Reserve around them, describes the visit as a day shared with the Uros people. In practice a family shows you how an island is built, you walk on the springy surface, and there are crafts to buy. A ride on a reed boat is offered at the end; it is optional and paid on the spot, S/15 a person on the listings that name a price.
From the Uros the boat heads east to Taquile, about 35 km from Puno’s port. Taquile is a natural island of terraced fields and stone arches with no cars, and its people are known for their weaving: Peru’s Ministry of Culture lists Taquile’s textile art among the country’s entries on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list, inscribed in 2008. You land, walk up to the village square (a steady climb from the jetty, and you are above 3,800 m: take it slowly), have lunch at a family restaurant and look out over the lake to the snow peaks of Bolivia. Then the boat brings you back to Puno, around 15:45.

Prices, inclusions and the reed-boat fee from the GetYourGuide listings, checked October 2026. Operators set prices by season, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
So the island fees are not a separate cost on these tours; bring soles in cash only for the reed boat, drinks, snacks and anything you buy from the weavers. The communities set their own landing fees and publish no tariff online, which is one reason to take a tour that includes them.
Lake Titicaca, part by part
- The Uros floating islands in three hours, from $9 in current promotion (usually $12): the best choice if you have a morning or an afternoon, or a night bus to catch.
- Taquile is the long half of the classic day, and its page compares the full-day tours that stop there.
- A night on Amantani is the two-day trip: you sleep in a family home, climb to the island’s hilltop temples at sunset and see Taquile the next morning.
- Puno is more than a port: the Sillustani tombs, the town and where to stay.
- Cusco to Puno is the way most people arrive: a sightseeing bus with stops or the PeruRail Titicaca train.
- The Bolivian side: Copacabana and the Isla del Sol, over the border at Kasani.
Altitude: plan for your first day
The lake lies at 3,810 m and Puno at 3,827 m, higher than Cusco (3,399 m). If you arrive by road or train from Cusco, you have had a few days to get used to the height; flying straight into Juliaca from the coast, you have not. Either way, keep the boat for your second day and spend the first afternoon walking slowly around town. The altitude guide has every stop in metres and what helps.
Where to stay
Stay in the centre of Puno, within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas and the pedestrian Jirón Lima: every tour picks up there, and the restaurants are there too. If you would rather wake up to the water, a handful of larger hotels sit on the lake shore just outside the centre; they are quieter, and you will take taxis into town.

How these facts were checked
The lake’s altitude and the description of the Uros visit are from SERNANP’s page for the Titicaca National Reserve (visitaareasnaturales.sernanp.gob.pe), and Puno’s altitude from the Municipalidad Provincial de Puno (munipuno.gob.pe), read 27 October 2026; Cusco’s altitude is INEI’s. The distance to Taquile is from the Peruvian Congress’s profile of the Puno region, and the UNESCO inscription of Taquile’s textile art from the Ministry of Culture’s 2025 annual report. Tour prices, ratings, times, inclusions and the reed-boat fee are from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026. Prices and timetables change: check them again before you travel.

Lake Titicaca Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a day on the lake from Puno, answered in the first sentence.
The classic day includes hotel pick-up in central Puno, a speedboat, a bilingual guide, the landing fees for the Uros and Taquile islands and lunch on Taquile. That is what the full-day listings on this page include (GetYourGuide, checked October 2026). The ride on a traditional reed boat at the Uros is optional and paid on the spot; one operator lists it at S/15 a person.
A full day: about 8 to 9 hours, roughly 7:30 to 15:45. About an hour and a half on the Uros, about three hours on Taquile including lunch, and the rest on the boat. Speedboats are what make it fit in a day; the slow boats take about three hours to reach Taquile from Puno.
Puno, on the Peruvian shore, is the base for the Uros, Taquile and Amantani: the boats leave from its port. On the Bolivian side the lake town is Copacabana, the base for the Isla del Sol. Juliaca, with the airport, sits inland on the plain north of Puno.
For a first visit, Peru: the Uros, Taquile and Amantani are all reached from Puno, and Puno is on the road and rail line from Cusco. The Bolivian side has the Isla del Sol and Copacabana, and makes sense if you are travelling on to La Paz. The Peru or Bolivia guide compares the two.
May to September, the dry season, gives the clearest skies and the calmest days on the water. June and July are also the coldest nights, close to freezing in Puno. The rains fall mainly from about December to March. The best-time guide goes month by month.
Many people feel the altitude here: the lake lies at 3,810 m and Puno at 3,827 m, higher than Cusco. Mild headache and breathlessness on the first day are common. Arriving from Cusco helps, since you have already spent a few days high up; rest on your first afternoon and book the boat for the second day. See the Puno altitude guide.
Yes, for most visitors: it is the one day that shows both faces of the lake, the reed islands built by hand and the stone island of the Taquile weavers. Expect the Uros to be organised for visitors: families show how the islands are built and sell crafts. Taquile is quieter, with a walk, a view and a long lunch.
Yes: the two-day tours stay with a host family on Amantani, and a few Uros islands run small lodges. The Amantani homestay page explains what the night is like and which tour to book.
